Being a councillor on Thurrock Council seems to be one never ending game of musical chairs doesn’t it? It’s being rumoured that yet another councillor has decided they don’t like the party they’re in and has decided to walk across the floor of the council chamber. The latest one mooted to take part in the walk of shame is Cllr. Abbie Akinbohun (South Chafford) who wants to switch from Labour to join…you guessed it…the ruling Tory group! As we seem to have to keep on saying, this is yet another councillor who needs to examine their conscience and then do the right thing by standing down, forcing a by-election and letting the voters decide if they want to be represented by a Tory. Instances of this actually happening are extremely rare and we won’t be holding our breath waiting for Cllr. Akinbohun to decide she needs to do the right thing.

This is taking the piss of of the electorate. The next lot of council election are coming up in May and we’ll be getting the door knockers with their rosettes on begging for our votes. There are two ways of approaching this…

The first is telling each and every candidate who come knocking that you will not tolerate them walking across the floor to switch allegiances after they’ve been elected – get them to (metaphorically) sign a declaration to that effect in their own blood. The second is to simply boycott the local elections which, when you look at the turnout figures, is what the majority of the electorate already do. Knocking the turnout down to 10-20% of the electorate might just send a signal that we’re fed up with local politicians taking the piss out of us…
