These are some commentaries that we’ve found to be useful in getting a grip on the volatile and rapidly developing situation in Iran and the wider Middle East. We’re open to suggestions for readings that can be added to this list. The emphasis for extra readings is on voices from the ground in the region.

Neither Washington nor Tehran

The drone killing of Qassem Suleimani, leader of an Iranian militia currently operating in Iraq, and an important figure within the Iranian regime, along with other notable figures of that regime, shows the lengths to which the Trump administration will go in protecting their interests. The attack happened in Iraq, an ally of the United States and is clearly a warning, not just to Iran and its own imperialist manoeuvres in the region, but to all those allies of Iran, like the Shiite militias in Iraq and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Syrian regime of Assad. Beyond that, it is a warning to Russia, Iran’s and Syria’s principal ally, and to Russian interests in the Middle East.

Qasem Soleimani has long tormented the people and we congratulate the survivors of his crimes in the Middle East, particularly Syria, Iraq and Yemen. And while we are glad for the death of this war criminal, we declare our strong opposition to the possibility of a state war (between US state terrorism and Iranian state terrorism)

Oppose U.S. and Iran War by Showing Solidarity with Uprisings in the MENA Region

The most worrisome aspect of these developments is that they might lead to catastrophic consequences and full-scale war. That would in turn overshadow the wave of uprisings that have broken out in the Middle East and North Africa region in 2019, from Sudan and Algeria to Iraq, Lebanon and Iran.
