There’s one more day of spin, bullshit, hot air and lies, and the election campaign is over as the country gets down to voting/not voting/spoiling ballot papers… Suffice to say, we’ll be glad to see the back of this toxic shitshow of an election.
It’s still a hard one to predict to be honest. Both Thurrock and South Basildon & East Thurrock will be interesting as they have high profile, Brexit supporting independents contesting the seats. Our gut feeling is that both are pretty certain to save their deposits and will have an impact on the outcome as they’ll be taking votes from both Labour and the Tories. There may well be a surprise or two in store…
As for the Brexit Party and Farage, they’re toast. Pulling candidates from Tory held seats and shafting people who thought they would be standing for the Brexit Party has played really badly out our way. Which is why we reckon the two independents in Thurrock and Basildon will do better than expected as a fair number of folk may cast a vote for them to give the finger to a Brexit Party they feel has betrayed them. Interesting times lie ahead as yet again, the Brexit supporting right away from the Tory party faces another re-configuration.
We make no apologies for focusing on independents and the Brexit Party – being based in Thurrock we need to focus on what kind of political landscape we’ll be operating in after the election. At some point on Friday evening, we’ll try to come up with an initial analysis of the election results to see if we can start to shed some light on what that landscape will look like. As ever, we’ll be focusing on the turnout which always tells a story of its own.
As for the voting/not voting/spoiling ballot papers, when it comes to fellow activists, we’re not going to sit in judgement on what they choose to do tomorrow. It’s what they do as activists on every other day of the year that we judge people on.
Suffice to say, all of the old certainties have gone as we enter new territory – one where maverick independents may have more of a say…
