When you adopt a ‘pox on both your houses’ position on Brexit, it’s interesting how many entrenched Remainers on the one hand and Brexiteers on the other struggle to accept this is a perfectly valid third position to take on the issue. One that the 27.8% of the electorate who chose not to vote adopted when the referendum was held in 2016.
When last Saturday (24.8), we plotted up on Southend High Street between a Brexit Party stall on one side and an EU Remainer counter protest on the other, to have an opportunistic, impromptu Heckler distro, we got that vibe from a few people. There was one Leaver in particular who even after a brief explanation of why we adopted the ‘pox on both your houses’ approach, gave the impression that if I pushed the discussion much further, I’d get decked!
When we terminated the distro, we handed copies of the Heckler to the guy on the Brexit Party stall and also to the EU Remainers on the other side. The Brexit Party guy seemed to be okay with our position – fair play to him. The EU Remainers, while being quite pleasant, appeared to be shocked that anyone could possibly take a third position…LOL!
As things are getting pretty intense with Brexit, now more than ever, the ‘pox on both your houses’ position needs to be articulated…
Lastly, this is one of a number of pieces we’ve written articulating this position: There’s a third position that can be taken on Brexit…
